During grade 11 you will be given a solid grounding in film theory and practical filming experience in order to complete the Independent Study in grade 11 and as preparation for the Practical Portfolio and Oral Presentation in grade 12.
For convenience we will take a broadly historical approach as outlined below, but along the way we will move between films from different cultures and time periods. We will also look at the socio-economic background of films and different theoretical approaches to film studies through consideration of such matters as auteur theory, genre studies, public and critical responses, and feminist approaches to film. |

DocumentaryFrench New WaveNew Wave rejected the idea of a traditional story of stories based on narrative styles and structures lifted from books and theatre. The New Wave directors did not want to hold your hand through each scene, directing you emotion by emotion, through a fixed narrative. There was a feeling that this sort of storytelling interfered with the viewer's ability to perceive and react to film just as they would perceive and react to life.
